SSAS: The service cannot be started: The following system error occurred: A required privilege is not held by the client.

When you try to start SQL Server Analysis Service which is in stopped state, you might come across the below error.

This error screen does not give more information, to get more information, you can go to Windows Eventviewer and if you check under Application Logs, you might find the below error.

"The service cannot be started: The following system error occurred:  A required privilege is not held by the client." or "The service cannot be started: An error occurred during initialization: failure from CreateFileMapping. The following system error occurred: A required privilege is not held by the client. ". Screenshot below for both errors.

This error generally occurs when the Service Account under which SQL Server Analysis Service SSAS is running is not having sufficient permission to start the service.

A quick way to resolve this is to Add the Service Account under which SQL Server Analysis Service SSAS is running to Administrator Group(Local Administrator) on the Server. Once added, go to SQL Server configuration Manager and Start the service. The SSAS service will be started successfully.
